Water access project in rural communities in Real Sayana

Water access project in rural communities in Real Sayana

Santiago del Estero

We are working on a project to enable access to water in the Municipality of Real Sayana, Paraje “Las Cañas”, in Santiago del Estero.

 PROJECT FINALIZED
WORK LINE: WATER AND SANITATION
TECHNICAL AREA: WATER AND SANITATION

Actors Involved

Ministry of Public Works of the Nation (Ministerio de Obras Públicas de la Nación), National Department of Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation (Dirección Nacional de Agua Potable y Saneamiento), Secretary of Infrastructure and Water Policy (Secretaría de Infraestructura y Política Hídrica), Municipality of Real Sayana, National Institute of Family, Peasant and Indigenous Agriculture (Instituto Nacional de la Agricultura Familiar, Campesina e Indígena), Engineering without Borders Argentina (Ingeniería Sin Fronteras Argentina) and different work crews from nearby communities.

What we are doing

We are building twenty-nine rainwater harvesting and storage systems so that families can access safe water during droughts. We are carrying this out as part of the «Programme for access to water, sanitation and hygiene in sparse rural areas» (Programa de acceso al agua, el saneamiento y la higiene en zonas rurales dispersas), created by Resolution 37/2022 of the National Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Obras Públicas de la Nación).

Why

In Argentina, the access to water and sanitation situation in sparse rural communities is critical. Their high vulnerability has implications for the health of the population and the replication of social inequalities. The main victims of the lack of access to water and sanitation are women and girls, who, due to gender inequalities in terms of caregiving tasks, are mainly responsible for household water management.

WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROJECT, WE WILL:

  • Improving access to water in isolated rural communities in Santiago del Estero.
  • Reducing the gender gap deepened by the lack of access to water and sanitation.
  • Promoting job generation through the recruitment of workers from the area for each construction site.
