Water access project in rural communities from Herrera

Water access project in rural communities from Herrera

Santiago del Estero

As part of the «Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Isolated Rural Communities Program» of the Department of Public Works, we are working on a project to facilitate access to water in San José Oeste, Santiago del Estero.

 PROJECT IN EXECUTION
WORK LINE: WATER AND SANITATION
TECHNICAL AREA: WATER AND SANITATION

Actors Involved

National Department of Public Works, National Agency of Potable Water and Sanitation, Department of Infrastructure and Water Policy, Lugones City Hall, National Institute of Family, Peasant and Indigenous Agriculture, Engineering Without Borders Argentina and different teams of volunteers from nearby towns.

What we are doing

We are building 26 systems of rainwater collection and storage so that families can have access to safe water. Each system of water access consists of the construction of a tank or reservoir of 16000 liters for storage and a roof structure connected to the tank to collect rainwater.

Why

In isolated rural communities affected by drought and climate variability, water access is a daily problem that needs to be solved. Rural families depend on a government tank truck, they collect rainwater in plastic containers of all sorts, and must move to get the resource, they drink unsafe water for human consumption.  The lack of water has great impact on life quality and on the access to other fundamental rights.

WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROJECT, WE WILL:

  • Facilitate water access in isolated rural communities in Santiago del Estero.
  • Reduce the gender gap, worsened by the lack of water access and sanitation.
  • Promote the creation of jobs through hiring workers from the area for each work.
