Providing access to water in rural communities located in Lugones

Providing access to water in rural communities located in Lugones

Santiago del Estero

As part of the “Program to provide access to water, sanitation and hygiene in isolated rural areas” promoted by the National Ministry of Public Works, we are working on a project to facilitate access to water in Tusca Pozo and Caspi Cuchuna, Municipality of Lugones, province of Santiago del Estero.

 PROJECT IN EXECUTION
WORK LINE: WATER AND SANITATION
TECHNICAL AREA: WATER AND SANITATION

Actors Involved

National Ministry of Public Works, Water and Sanitation Authority, Office of infrastructure and water policy, Municipality of Lugones, National Institute of Family, Peasant and Indigenous Agriculture, Engineering Without Borders Argentina and different task forces from neighboring communities.

What we are doing

We are working on building 26 harvest and rainwater storage systems in order to provide access to safe water sources. Each project involves building water access systems, which include a water cistern or reservoir with a storage capacity of 16 000 liters, together with a roof suitable for rainwater collection that drains into the storage chamber.

Why

In isolated rural communities affected by drought and climate variability, access to water is an everyday challenge. Rural families depend on a local tanker truck; they collect rainwater in plastic containers of every shape and size and need to move around in order to obtain enough water, which results in them drinking from unsafe water sources. Quality of life and other fundamental rights are greatly affected by lack of water.

WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROJECT, WE WILL:

  • Facilitate access to water to isolated rural communities in Santiago del Estero.
  • Reduce the gender gap, which is worsened by lack of water supply and sanitation.
  • Promote job creation by providing employment to local workers.
