Expansion of COVID-19 respirators capacity

Expansion of COVID-19 respirators capacity

Buenos Aires.

We are developing biomedical technology that enables to increase respirators’ capacity, in case there is an overburden on the health system due to COVID-19.

Actors involved

EWB-Ar volunteers.

What are we doing?

In the wake of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, we are developing technologies in order to increase existing commercial respirators’ capacity that enables them to be used by more than one person at a time with the goal to alleviate the health care system in case the number of available respirators becomes saturated.
It´s a low complexity kit, flexible enough to be used by people of different physiques and with the ability to regulate and monitor the amount of oxygen to be received by each individual. Real time and remote control of how much oxygen is being received by each person is possible since this development includes and app for such purpose.

Why

Currently, the health system of Argentina has an approximate capacity of 5,000 respirators. According to the national government, it is estimated that between 10 thousand to 110 thousand patients might need intensive care due to COVID-19; thus, the number of available respirators might become insufficient.

With the implementation of this project, we will:

  • Reduce the estate of emergency of the health system.
  • Increase the capacity to attend critical patients in Argentina.
  • Offer an affordable alternative to hospitals and clinics that are overloaded.
